The Nature of Essential Rest
Main Passage: Proverbs 19:20-23 Additional Passages: Mark 2:17, Psalm 130:1-4, Ephesians 1:3-14 Reflection Question: If I know the truths about the Sabbath and the value of keeping it, why is it that I struggle to align my values, priorities, and character with Jesus so as to experience all that is provided him that is Sabbath? “The ancient man approached God as the accused person approaches his judge. For the modern man the roles are reversed. He is the judge; God is on the dock.” -C.S. Lewis [God on the Dock] “Believing this truth will prevent our strategies in the fight for joy from degenerating into technique and legalism. Technique cannot be paramount because God is sovereign. There are things we must do in the battle for joy. But if joy is a gift it can never be earned. So legalism that tries to earn things from God is excluded. Not only that, but know that joy is ultimately a gift, and not a mere human achievement, also protects us from elevating technique and willpower too highly.” -John Piper
