Kevin King – Elder

How did you become a believer?

One day as an adult, the Holy Spirit planted a question in my mind that led me to deep reflection of the cross – “What did it mean for Jesus to die on the cross?” This had been a question that I had heard, and what I thought I knew was the answer, my whole life – “that Jesus died for my sins.” However, that answer didn’t seem enough and for the next few weeks I struggled with what it meant for Jesus to have died on the cross. Over the next few weeks, the Holy Spirit continued to open my eyes to see that it wasn’t just Jesus’ death for my sins in a general sense, but He was my substitute – He suffered God’s wrath on the cross for my sins, He paid the penalty for my sins, He removed the stain of my sins, He gives eternal life and eternal fellowship with God to those who are given a new heart of flesh and a new spirit. It was then that God saved me and I followed Him.

Tell me about your family:

My wife, Angie, and I have been married since 2010. I met Angie while stationed in Florida with the Air Force. We’ve lived in Coopertown since 2014. We have seven kids and we try to spend most of our time outdoors swimming, riding ATVs/UTVs, and taking care of our little hobby farm. We’ve run that gamut of sports with basketball, soccer, cheer, cross country, tennis, and pickleball, but now focus most of our attention on other activities.  Angie runs a nature enrichment, while homeschooling our children.

What book of the Bible is dearest or most meaningful to you? Why?

Ephesians has always been one of the most meaningful books to me. It has such deep theological principles of the Father, Son, and Spirit. It provides an abundance of doctrinal richness and the workings of the Godhead in salvation. Not only that, but Paul provides a beautiful framework of application to live out and apply the doctrines he stated in a practical way to glorify Jesus for the work He had done.

Is there one person in your life (past or present) who has influenced you the most spiritually?

My late grandfather has influenced me the most in my spiritual life. It’s not because he taught me deep theological doctrines or anything like that – he had passed before I was saved. Living with some distance between us growing up, I didn’t really see him that often. When I did see him, he was always talking about the Lord and how to serve him. Even in his 70s and 80s, he was serving the church and taking mission trips to Mexico. It seems everything he did was to glorify Christ.

Who are some of your favorite theological authors?

R.C. Sproul, Joel Beeke, John MacArthur, John Owen, Jonathan Edwards, Paul Washer

What book would you recommend for each the following:

* Prayer – Praying the Bible by Donald Whitney

* Marriage – Momentary Marriage by John Piper

* Biblical interpretation – Everyone’s a Theologian by R.C. Sproul

What are your hobbies/interests?

Angie would say that my main hobby is collecting books that I’ll never read, which would be hard for me to deny – but I also enjoy reading them some. I appreciate any time I can spend with her and the kids, whether it’s tending to our farm animals together, eating dinner as a family, or watching movies. We also enjoy traveling some, as long as it’s to a warm location.
